Itaewon’s History Over the Past 100 Years

1910s-1945
Japanese Colonial Period
Itaewon became strategically significant due to its proximity to Yongsan, which housed Japanese military facilities. Urbanization began, laying the foundation for its future as a multicultural hub.
1945-1950
Post-Liberation
After Korea’s liberation from Japan, Itaewon transitioned into a civilian area. Its location near the newly established U.S. military base in Yongsan set the stage for its internationalization.
1950s-1970s
Korean War and Recovery
During and after the Korean War, Itaewon became a hub for U.S. soldiers. Bars, restaurants, and clothing stores catering to foreign tastes flourished, introducing diverse cultural influences to the area.
1980s
Emergence as a Global Hotspot
Itaewon gained recognition as a tourist destination. Its vibrant nightlife, international restaurants, and shops attracted visitors from around the world, marking its rise as a symbol of cultural diversity in Seoul.
1990s-2000s
Cultural Growth and Diversification
The area continued to develop as a melting pot of cultures. Key landmarks like the Seoul Central Mosque and Itaewon Antique Furniture Street added to its global appeal. Events and festivals celebrating diversity became more common.
2010s
Modern Transformation
Itaewon became a trendy destination for young locals and tourists. The influence of media and pop culture, including TV shows like “Itaewon Class,” further elevated its status as a symbol of freedom and modernity.
2020s
Challenges and Revival
Despite challenges such as the 2022 Itaewon tragedy, the area remains a cornerstone of Seoul’s cultural identity. Efforts to revitalize its economy and preserve its multicultural legacy are ongoing.
